Electrical Troubleshooting Guide (Residential)
1. Power Outlets Not Working
✅ Check:
Tripped breaker → Reset panel breaker.
GFCI tripped → Reset all GFCI outlets on the circuit (often in bathrooms, kitchen, garage).
Loose wire in box → Turn off power, pull outlet, inspect backstabbed wires.
Burned outlet → Replace if blackened or cracked.
2. Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping
✅ Check:
Overload → Too many devices on one circuit.
Short circuit → Burned wire, screw touching box.
Ground fault → Use GFCI or breaker tester to diagnose.
Appliance fault → Try unplugging all devices and testing again.
3. Lights Flickering
✅ Possible Causes:
Loose bulb or socket → Tighten or replace.
Loose wire in switch or fixture → Check wire nuts and connections.
Voltage drop from large load → A/C or pump starting? May need dedicated circuit.
Bad switch or dimmer → Swap it out.
4. Light or Outlet Doesn’t Work But Breaker is ON
✅ Check:
Neutral wire loose or disconnected
Backstabbed wire pulled out
Bad switch or receptacle → Replace.
5. Burning Smell or Warm Outlet
✅ STOP and check immediately:
Loose connections → Causes resistance and overheating.
Overloaded circuit
Old or damaged outlet → Replace.
